In ESX server 2.x, a disk mode in which all write operations that are issued by software running inside the virtual machines appear to be written to the disk, but, in fact, are stored in a temporary file (.REDO) for the duration of the session. When the virtual machine is powered off, the user has these choices: permanently apply all changes to the disk; discard the changes, and restore the disk to its previous state; or keep the changes, so that further changes from future sessions can be added to the log.
