Industry:Computer; Software
A software entity that has been established as a configuration item. The software configuration item exists where functional allocations have been made that clearly delineate the separation between equipment functions and software functions and the software has been established as a configurable item. Contrast with hardware configuration item (HCI).
Industry:Computer; Software
(1) The formal examination of the configuration of a hardware/software configuration item against its technical documentation to establish the product or operational baseline. (2) An audit of the product specification and an inspection of the format and completeness of the user's manual and other manuals or handbooks due for acceptance at this time.
Industry:Computer; Software
A hardware entity that has been established as a configuration item. The hardware configuration item exists where functional allocations have been made which clearly delineate the separation between equipment functions and software functions and the hardware has been established as a configuration item. Contrast with software configuration item (SCI).

In an inspection, the individual that is responsible for administrative tasks pertaining to the inspection, for planning and preparation of the inspection or walkthrough, ensures that the inspection is conducted in an orderly manner and meets its objectives, is responsible for collecting inspection data (if appropriate), and issues the inspection report.
Industry:Computer; Software
A document that specifies the design of a system or component. Typical contents include algorithms, system or component architecture, control logic, data structures, input/output formats, and interface descriptions. Also called software design description, internal specifications. Contrast with software requirements specification, external specifications.
Industry:Computer; Software
A form of not-for-profit analysis, derived from benefit-cost analysis, which seeks to maximize effectiveness for a minimum cost. Fixed-cost analysis seeks to maximize the effectiveness that can be attained from a fixed, maximum investment. Fixed-effectiveness analysis seeks to minimize the investment needed to attain a fixed, minimum degree of effectiveness.
Industry:Computer; Software
A denotation of a range of values of a property of an item necessary to maintain system risks within acceptable limits. For items that perform mitigating functions, the property is the reliability with which the item must perform the mitigating function. For items whose failure can lead to a threat, the property is the limit on the frequency of that failure.
Industry:Computer; Software
(1) The process of refining and expanding software architectural designs to more detailed descriptions of the processing logic, data structures, and data definitions. This continues until the design is sufficiently complete to be implemented. (2) The result of the detailed design process. Also called design, low-level design, module design, and program design.
Industry:Computer; Software
In system/software engineering, a document that states the functions that software must perform, required level of performance (speed, accuracy, etc.), the nature of the required interfaces between the software product and its environment, the type and severity of constraints on design, and the quality of the final product. Synonymous with external specification.
