A compound-wound generator (a generator that has both a series and a parallel, or shunt, winding) in which the effect of the two fields are balanced so they hold the output voltage constant from a no-load condition to the maximum load the generator can produce.
Industry:Aviation
A compound-wound motor (a motor having both a series and a shunt field) in which the series field has the greater effect on the motor characteristics. The shunt, or parallel, field attempts to hold the speed of the motor constant as the load changes, but the series field causes the motor to speed up as the load increases. In a flat compounded motor, the effects of the two fields cancel, and the motor speed remains relatively constant as the load changes. In an overcompounded motor, the series winding has the greater effect, and the motor tries to speed up as the load increases.
Industry:Aviation
A compressor in a gas turbine engine that uses a scroll-type impeller. Air is taken into the center, or eye, of the impeller and slung outward by centrifugal force into the diffuser where its velocity is decreased and its pressure increased. Centrifugal compressors were used on the first gas turbine aircraft engines, and are used on some modern engines as a high-pressure stage that receives its input air from a low-pressure axial-flow stage.
Industry:Aviation
A computer language whose instructions are terms similar to those used in normal communications. Statements in the high-level language entered into the computer produce a series of machine-language instructions the computer can understand. BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, and PASCAL are examples of high-level languages.
Industry:Aviation
A computer memory in which data is stored in semiconductor devices, such as flip-flop circuits and capacitors. Flip-flops are normally used for static storage and capacitors for dynamic storage. Static storage is used for ROM (read-only memory), in which data is programmed when the chip is manufactured. Data can be read from it, but no new data can be written into it. ROM is nonvolatile, meaning that the data remains in ROM even when all computer power is turned off.
Industry:Aviation
A computer program developed to provide a backup system for airport surveillance radar in the event of a failure or malfunction. The program uses air route traffic control center radar for the processing and presentation of data on the ARTS IIA or IIIA displays.
Industry:Aviation
A computer program stored in read-only memory (ROM). Programs are stored in ROM when they are used repeatedly; such as, for example, the operating procedures in dedicated computers.
Industry:Aviation
A computer system that receives radar track data from all 20 Continental U.S. air route traffic control centers, organizes this data into a mosaic display, and presents it on a computer screen. The ASD provides the traffic management coordinator with multiple methods of selection and highlighting of individual aircraft or groups of aircraft. The user has the option of superimposing these aircraft positions over any number of background displays, which include ARTCC boundaries, any stratum of en route sector boundaries, fixes, airways, military and other special-use airspace, airports, and geopolitical boundaries. By using the ASD, a coordinator can monitor any number of traffic situations or the entire systemwide traffic flow.
Industry:Aviation
A computer system that uses a large data base to allow routes to be preprogrammed and fed into the system by means of a data loader. The system is constantly updated with respect to position accuracy by reference to conventional navigation aids. The sophisticated program and its associated data base insures that the most appropriate aids are automatically selected during the information update cycle.
Industry:Aviation
A computer that has both analog and digital circuits and functions.
