A type of wing flap in which a part of the wing trailing edge inboard of the aileron is hinged to fold downward in flight to change the camber of the wing.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wing flap installed on some of the smaller airplanes. A portion of the trailing edge of the wing inboard of the ailerons can be folded downward in flight to increase the camber of the wing. This increases both the lift and the drag the wing produces.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wing flap which moves out of the trailing edge of a wing on tracks. Fowler flaps increase both the wing area and camber which increases the lift and drag produced by the wing. They allow the wing to produce its lift at a slower airspeed so less runway is required for takeoff and landing.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wing flaps in which a part of the under side of the wing or the trailing edge of the wing splits and folds down to increase the curvature (camber) of the bottom of the wing. The increased camber increases the drag and also the lift produced by the wing under low-speed flight conditions.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wire connector used in aircraft electrical systems. The wires terminate inside an insulated plug with pins or sockets that mate with the opposite type of terminals in a similar plug. The two halves of the connector push together and are held tight with a special nut.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wire cutters commonly used by aircraft maintenance technicians. The short, strong jaws are ground so they cut the wire by a chiseling action, rather than by shearing.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wire having a low electrical resistance and a high tensile strength. Copperweld, a form of copper-plated steel wire, is often used for antennas.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wire splice used to join two pieces of solid copper wire. The insulation is removed from the ends of the two pieces of wire, and the wires are scraped clean of all oxide coating. The wires are crossed and each end is wrapped around other wire; then the joint is coated with molten solder and insulated with tape.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wire-wound resistor with connections made to the resistance wire at points between its ends. The connection to the resistance wire is permanent in some tapped resistors, but other resistors have a section of the wire left bare. A clamp can be moved to a point where it contacts the wire at the correct point to furnish the desired resistance. The clamp is then tightened.
Industry:Aviation
A type of wood product made by gluing together several thin strips of wood. In laminated wood, the grain of all the pieces runs in the same direction. A wooden propeller is made of several pieces of hardwood laminated together.
