A type of instrument or small tool used to grasp or hold objects. Most forceps have a ratchet mechanism that allows them to be locked onto the object they are holding.
Industry:Aviation
A type of instrument that uses the resonant frequency of a vibrating metal reed to measure the frequency of alternating current. Metal reeds having different lengths are vibrated by electromagnetism produced by the alternating current. The reed whose resonant frequency is the same as that of the AC will vibrate with the greatest amplitude, and the resonant frequency of this reed is shown on a calibrated scale on the face of the instrument. An electromechanical frequency meter is also called a vibrating-reed frequency meter.
Industry:Aviation
A type of insulation wrapped around some of the lines in an aircraft engine lubrication system to keep it from losing heat in the oil to the outside air.
Industry:Aviation
A type of joint made between two pieces of material in which one piece is lapped over the other and the two fastened together. Lap joints are used to join sheets of metal by welding, riveting, or bolting. Lap joints are also used for joining sheets of wood, paper, or cloth with adhesives.
Industry:Aviation
A type of knot used for lacing wire bundles together. The bundle is tied with two half hitches secured with a square knot.
Industry:Aviation
A type of lacquer that dries with a flat, or nonglossy, surface. Flat lacquer is used for painting instrument panels and any part of an aircraft that must not reflect light.
Industry:Aviation
A type of laminated structure used where high strength, light weight, and rigidity are required. One commonly used type of sandwich construction is made of a fiberglass or metal honeycomb core bonded between two sheets of resin-impregnated fiberglass or metal.
Industry:Aviation
A type of lamp used for outdoor lighting, especially along highways. Metallic sodium is vaporized inside a glass tube that contains a low-pressure gas. A voltage is placed across electrodes inside the glass tube, and the gas between the electrodes becomes ionized and glows enough to produce an orange light.
Industry:Aviation
A type of landing gear installed on some tail-wheel airplanes to make crosswind landings easier for the pilot. In a crosswind landing gear, the two main wheels are equipped with a spring-loaded cam that allows them to be turned away from their normal position which is parallel to the fuselage of the airplane. When an airplane, crabbed into the wind for a crosswind landing, touches down, the wheels automatically turn at an angle to the fuselage so they roll straight down the runway while the fuselage is pointed into the wind.
Industry:Aviation
A type of lead-acid battery cell that has a gelling agent added to the electrolyte to make it nonspillable. Gelled-cell batteries are used for portable operations.
