Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A combination axial and centrifugal compressor used in a gas turbine engine. The axial-flow portion of the compressor serves as the low-pressure stage, and the centrifugal portion serves as the high-pressure stage.
Industry:Aviation
A combination electrical component installed on some small gas turbine engines. The starter-generator acts as a motor to start the engine, and after it is running, electrical relays change the circuitry inside the unit so it functions as a generator.
Industry:Aviation
A combination elevator and aileron. Elevons are installed on the trailing edge of a delta wing or a flying wing airplane. Fore-and-aft movement of the control yoke causes the elevons to operate together. This causes the airplane to rotate about its lateral, or pitch, axis. Movement of the stick or control wheel to the right or left causes the elevons to move differentially. The left elevon moves up and the right elevon moves down. Differential movement of the elevons causes the airplane to rotate about its longitudinal, or roll, axis.
Industry:Aviation
A combination of electronic components built onto a single substrate of semiconductor material. Transistors, diodes, capacitors, and resistors are all built onto a tiny chip and mounted in a protective package that allows the circuit to connect with other components or devices. Logic gates, rectifiers, amplifiers, microprocessors, and semiconductor memory circuits can all be built as integrated circuits. The development of integrated circuits has made miniature electronics possible.
Industry:Aviation
A combination of smoke and haze similar to smog (smoke and fog), except it does not contain as much moisture. Smaze is generally found in heavily industrialized areas.
Industry:Aviation
A combination of substances held together by physical rather than chemical means. The constituents of a mixture retain all their own chemical properties and mixtures do not have to be combined in definite proportions, as is required for chemical compounds. Sweetened tea is a mixture of tea and sugar, and concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel, and cement.
Industry:Aviation
A combination of two or more atoms of chemical elements which have joined together to form molecules. A compound is different from a mixture in that the elements in a compound unite in specific amounts to form a substance different from any of the original elements. In a mixture, the elements keep their identity. When two atoms of hydrogen join one atom of oxygen by sharing some of their electrons, the chemical compound water (H2O) is formed.
Industry:Aviation
A combination pickup used to sample pitot pressure (ram air pressure) and static pressure (still air pressure). These two pressures, taken from outside a moving aircraft, are combined to measure airspeed. Pitot pressure is picked up through an open-end tube that sticks directly into the airstream, and static pressure is picked up through small holes or slots in the side of the pitot-static tube, or through flush ports on the side of the aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A combination voltmeter, milliammeter, and ohmmeter, all using a single indicating instrument. One current-measuring instrument and a number of switches, resistors, and rectifiers are used to measure a wide range of voltages, both AC and DC, current, normally in milliamperes and microamperes, and resistance in ohms. A VOM may have either an analog or digital display.
Industry:Aviation
A combined winds aloft and radiosonde observation. Winds are determined by tracking the radiosonde by radio direction finder or radar.
