A pin installed in a helicopter rotor blade to serve as an index when aligning the blades of a semirigid rotor system.
Industry:Aviation
A pin punch with a long straight shank and a flat end. A drift punch is used to drive a shaft out of its hole.
Industry:Aviation
A pin used to protect a piece of equipment by intentionally shearing if the equipment should seize. A shear pin is used in the drive shaft of some engine-driven pumps. If the pump should seize, the shear pin will break and allow the shaft to turn, but the pump is protected from further damage.
Industry:Aviation
A pipe or similar device used to carry a liquid from a container in a stream that is easy to control.
Industry:Aviation
A pipe protruding upward from the bottom of a tank, or reservoir, that allows part of the tank to be used as a reserve, or standby, source of fluid. The oil supply tanks for some aircraft engines have a standpipe in them. The main engine-driven oil pump is supplied from the standpipe, and emergency oil to feather the propeller is taken from the bottom of the tank. If an oil leak causes a loss of all of the oil the engine pump can move, there is still enough oil left in the tank to feather the propeller.
Industry:Aviation
A pivoted arm on the cylinder head of a reciprocating engine. The pushrod forces one end of the rocker arm up, and as the other end moves down, it forces the intake or exhaust valve off its seat.
Industry:Aviation
A pivoted beam used in an aircraft control system to allow more than one force to act on a common point. For example, two pulling forces may be applied to the ends of a whiffletree, and the device being pulled is connected to the point between the pulling forces.
Industry:Aviation
A plain, four-sided, closed figure in which the opposite sides are parallel, and the adjacent sides have different lengths. None of the angles in a rhomboid are right angles (90° angles).
Industry:Aviation
A plane (flat), closed polygon with four sides. Squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids are all forms of quadrilaterals.
Industry:Aviation
A plane (flat), closed, eight-sided figure. In a regular octagon, all sides have the same length, and all of the angles are the same.
