Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A method of coating one kind of metal with another. Cadmium is often plated on steel to make it corrosion resistant, and chromium can be plated on steel to make it hard and wear resistant. The steel is connected to the negative terminal of a direct current power supply, the cadmium or chromium is connected to the positive terminal, and both metals are immersed in an electrolyte. Ionized atoms of cadmium or chromium in the electrolyte are deposited on the steel, and these atoms are replaced from the cadmium or chromium electrode.
Industry:Aviation
A method of cold-forming the edges of a hole in a piece of sheet metal so it can be riveted with flush rivets. A cone-shaped male die fits into the rivet hole and forces the metal down into a depression in a female die. The edges of a radius-dimpled hole are rounded, rather than sharp, as they are in a coin-dimpled hole.
Industry:Aviation
A method of communicating which allows transmission and reception of two signals at the same time. Diplex operation uses a single antenna or a single carrier.
Industry:Aviation
A method of communications in which each end can simultaneously transmit and receive. Communication by telephone is duplex operation. Duplex operation by radiotelephone requires the use of two frequencies.
Industry:Aviation
A method of communications in which one station transmits while the other receives, then the second station transmits and the first receives. Simplex communications differs from duplex communications, such as telephone, in which both stations can transmit and receive at the same time.
Industry:Aviation
A method of connecting multiple stages of electrical circuits so the output of one stage feeds the input of the next stage.
Industry:Aviation
A method of connecting the armature coils in a DC generator or motor. The ends of each coil on the armature are connected to the next adjacent commutator segment, and the coils lap over each other. Lap winding differs from wave winding in which the ends of the coils are attached to segments on the opposite side of the commutator.
Industry:Aviation
A method of control used by some modern aircraft in which control movement or pressures exerted by the pilot are directed into a digital computer where they are input into a program tailored to the flight characteristics of the aircraft. The computer output signal is sent to actuators at the control surfaces to move them the optimum amount for the desired maneuver.
Industry:Aviation
A method of controlling the position of a beam of electrons on the face of a cathode-ray tube. The beam of electrons that forms the trace on a cathode-ray tube may be deflected to the correct position on the screen by electrostatic charges on plates placed above and below the beam, and on each side of the beam. If, for example, the top plate is given a positive charge, and the bottom plate a negative charge, the electrons in the beam (all electrons are negative) will deflect away from the lower plate toward the upper plate. The beam will deflect upward.
Industry:Aviation
A method of corrosion protection by the formation of a hard, airtight oxide coating on the surface of aluminum alloy parts by chemical means. The name is taken from the registered trade name of the chemical Alodine.
