A material that transfers heat energy by conduction with very little loss. Most metals are good thermal conductors, and such materials as paper, wood, and water are poor thermal conductors, or are thermal insulators.
Industry:Aviation
A material used as a base for roads and airport runways. Soil cement is made by mixing portland cement with soil and water and then compacting the mixture.
Industry:Aviation
A material used as a core for many electromagnetic components. Ferrite is made of powdered metal sintered and molded into the proper shape. Sintering is a process in which powdered metal is heated but not quite melted, and then squeezed together. Ferrite has a high permeability, it easily accepts lines of magnetic flux, but it has such a high resistance that eddy current losses are very low.
Industry:Aviation
A material used for cleaning or as an emulsifier. Soap is made by the chemical action between the salt of a metal, such as sodium or potassium, and a fatty oil. Soap assists water in penetrating a film of grease or dirt on a surface so it can be washed away.
Industry:Aviation
A material used to confuse enemy radar. Chaff is made of thin strips of metal foil packaged in such a way that it can be ejected from an airplane. When the chaff is ejected, it spreads out in the air and makes a large radar return.
Industry:Aviation
A material used to decorate and protect a surface. Lacquer is made of a film base, solvents, plasticizers, and thinners. The film base forms a tough film over the surface when it dries. The solvents dissolve the film base so it can be applied as a liquid. The plasticizers give the film base the needed resilience, and the thinners dilute the lacquer so it can be applied with a spray gun. Lacquer is sprayed on the surface as a liquid, and as soon as the solvents and the thinner evaporate, the film base remains as a tough, decorative coating.
Industry:Aviation
A material used to destroy bacteria.
Industry:Aviation
A material used to kill mildew before it destroys organic materials, such as cotton or linen fabric or leather. Cotton and linen fabric are both used to cover aircraft structure, and unless they are protected by a mildewcide, they soon lose their strength. A mildewcide is mixed in the first coat of clear dope applied to these fabrics.
Industry:Aviation
A material used to prevent the transfer of heat by conduction. Thermal insulation, for example, keeps hot air ducts from overheating the structure through which they are routed.
Industry:Aviation
A material used to produce an attractive and protective coating on wood or metal. Varnish is made of a resin dissolved in a solvent, and thinned until it is the proper viscosity to spray or brush. The varnish is spread evenly over the surface to be coated, and when the solvents evaporate, a tough film is left. Enamel is made by mixing a finely ground colored pigment into a varnish base.
