A hand tool used by mechanics to turn nuts and bolts. The jaws of the wrench are in the form of a slot with parallel sides that fit the nut or the bolt head. These jaws are usually offset from the axis of the handle by about 15°.
Industry:Aviation
A hand tool used in sheet metalwork that allows a technician to locate a rivet hole in a new sheet metal skin so the hole will be directly in line with a hole already existing in the structure being repaired.
The tool consists of a drill guide directly in line with a pilot pin and space for the undrilled skin to slip between the guide and the pin. The tool is slipped over the edge of the skin and the pilot pin inserted in the existing rivet hole. A hole drilled through the drill guide is directly in line with the existing rivet hole.

A hand tool used to install or remove screws. The bit of a screwdriver may be in the form of a straight, flat-edged blade, or it may be fluted to fit into a recessed-head screw. A screwdriver has a handle on its shank in line with the blade, but on the opposite end. The bit of the screwdriver fits into the slot or recess in the head of the screw, and the handle is twisted to turn the screw.
Industry:Aviation
A hand tool used to turn threaded fasteners such as bolts and nuts. A wrench has a slot or a hexagonal-shaped hole that fits over the head of the fastener and a handle to which a force is applied to turn the fastener.
Industry:Aviation
A hand-held air hammer that drives a rivet set with a series of sharp blows. A rivet set, with a recess the shape and size of the head of the rivet being driven, is held in the rivet gun with a spring-type retainer. The rivet set is pressed against the head of the rivet, and a heavy polished-steel bucking bar is held against the end of the rivet shank. The blows on the head of the rivet upset the shank and cause it to swell out and form the bucked, or shop, head.
Industry:Aviation
A hand-held ammeter for measuring the amount of alternating current flowing in a circuit without opening the circuit.
The jaws of the ammeter are opened and slipped over the current-carrying wire and then clamped shut. The magnetic field caused by the current flowing through the wire induces a voltage in the ammeter jaws, proportional to the amount of current flowing in the circuit.
Industry:Aviation
A hand-held cutting tool used to remove a small amount of metal by pushing the tool across the metal surface. A file is made of very hard, high-carbon steel, and has rows of teeth cut across its face at an angle to the length of the file.
Files with a single set of teeth are called single-cut files, and a file having a second set of teeth that cross the first set is called a double-cut file. The teeth on a file vary from very fine to coarse. A file with the finest teeth is said to have a dead-smooth cut; next in coarseness is a smooth cut, then a second cut, a bastard cut, and finally a coarse cut.
Industry:Aviation
A hand-held directional light signaling device, which emits a brilliant narrow beam of white, green, or red light as selected by the tower controller. The color and type of light transmitted is used to approve or disapprove anticipated pilot action when radio communication is not available.
Industry:Aviation
A hand-held drill motor used to drill relatively large holes in wood or metal. The handle of the drill motor is fitted with a curved plate that allows the user to apply a pushing force with his upper body as the drill cuts the hole.
Industry:Aviation
A hand-held punch that is tapered from its full shank size to a smaller diameter at its end. Tapered punches are used to start bolts, pins, or rivets from their holes.
