Turbochargers with variable turbine geometry change the output of the turbine as a function of engine load. In this way the optimum boost pressure can be maintained and optimum use can be made of the energy in the exhaust gas. Cross-sectional changes are made by resetting the turbine blades (smaller contact surface at low speeds, larger contact surface at high speeds). VTG turbochargers are particularly efficient at partial load and eliminate “turbo lag”. They increase engine power, increase throttle response and can also have a beneficial effect on particulate emissions. In addition, they open new perspectives regarding the control of exhaust gas recirculation.

In various Audi models, the Audi voice control system can be used to operate the most important navigation, radio and hands-free car phone functions by speaking the necessary commands directly. The Audi A8 makes all the functions of the navigation system available by voice control. The driver or front passenger can use this method to enter roads, house numbers and special destinations and can control the route calculation and route selection processes. To make a speech input, the driver presses the “Push to Talk” (PTT) button on the multifunction leather-covered steering wheel. The system can accept various accents and dialects, and even identifies words spoken quickly and run together. There is an electronic background noise reduction circuit to filter out unwanted noise effectively.

Since model year 2004, the S4 sedan and S4 Avant are both equipped with a new, two-stage braking system. For normal deceleration, the servo ratio is 5.5:1, meaning the amount of braking pressure being applied by the driver is multiplied by a factor of 5.5. When rapid deceleration is called for and the driver rapidly engages the braking mechanism, the servo ratio more than doubles to a remarkable 12:1 for extraordinarily enhanced stopping power.

The three-way catalytic converter can oxidize and break down gases and also convert oxides of nitrogen into environmentally more compatible nitrogen and oxygen as well as convert hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The combined process of these conflicting chemical reactions requires continuous control inasmuch as the exhaust may only contain the amount of oxygen that is required for the oxidation process (otherwise the reduction process will be impaired). For this reason, modern cars are always equipped with closed-loop, three-way catalytic converters. In contrast to the open-loop type, they have an oxygen sensor or “lambda probe” that measures the residual oxygen content in the exhaust. Based on this parameter, the electronic engine management system adjusts the fuel-air ratio to assure efficient exhaust clean-up.
